Look what I found today

I was outside shoveling snow and had the dogs with me. After a while Indra started to bark at something. I turned around and saw this dog running down our road. He still had a leash and a metal stick attached to it, on him. It was a gorgeous Shorthair Pointer that got loose.
He ran all the way down to the end of the road and returned. I put the dogs back inside and walked to the T-Section. I figured that he couldn’t have gotten very far. I called out to him “Come here, boy!” and he stopped. He turned around and looked at me for quite a while. I went down into my knees and lured him with a calm voice. He went for it and walked towards me.

What a gorgeous dog I thought, who would tie him up outside in the cold like that, he doesn’t have the undercoat German Shepherds have.

I grabbed his leash and brought him home. He was shivering like crazy and was freezing really bad.
It was quite interesting to get him into our house since I had three dogs waiting at the door to welcome the newbie. I was concerned about Zenzy and did not know how she’d take it. She’s not the friendliest dog when it comes up to strange dogs but she was surprisingly nice and did not want to eat him right away.

I put him into the crate and fed him.
Then I went online to find out what to do. When I got the tip to contact SPCA I did that and I sent an email to the newspaper and Chris(from “Dogs for Defense K-9”) put him on craigslist.
I also went from neighbor to neighbor to ask around if anyone knew that dog and they told me that they’ve seen him a couple of times and would ask around.

Later on I was picked up by Chris, she wanted to lead me around the town and show me places. She actually took care of Yukon while I was still in Germany and I really have to thank her for that. She did a great job and both, Chris and her friend Jess help so much to get me settled right in and it helps to have two friends like that!
Anyhow, apparently that is when his owner came by my neighbor and asked if somebody had seen his dog. He’d probably have a rope and the metalstick still attached to him.

Lucky him that he got picked up by somebody. People speed around here like crazy, thank god he didn’t get run over by a car.

So tomorrow his owner is coming by to pick him up. He must have ran quite a few miles and who knows how long he’s been out there.
Hopefully this will be a lesson for his owner. Even if out stake them out there just to potty, just don’t leave them alone! Don’t let them roam the neighborhood by themselve, always “supervise” your dogs. Whenever I let mine out I am actually with them. There is no way that I’d let them run around without my supervision and roam the neighborhood. I could never forgive myself if they’d take off and get run over, or worse, picked up by somebody and getting sold or killed by a farmer who thinks they’d attacking his life-stock.

Arrival in the US of A

My Visa arrived two weeks ago and everything went pretty fast from there. I got it Friday and went straight to SATO travels to book the flight for the 1st of December. SATO wanted to book us (doggies and me) with Lufthansa but since they charge 500 euros per dog I refused to fly with them. It would have been a 1000 euros to ship them over. I asked them what other options I had and they told me to go with United to Washington Dulles and to take a rental car to drive to New York.
I didn’t want to go with United again but since they are the cheapest I went that route.
At the airport I was reminded why I did not want to take United initially.

There were three dogs that had to be checked in. My two and another one. When they picked up the other dog they took one of mine as well even though she didn’t have the ticket on her kennel yet.
Yes, they carried her off without a ticket, I stood at the counter and once I turned around one of my dogs was gone. So two other guys ran off to find her Thankfully they managed to get her ticket on the kennel and she was boarded.

Another thing that ticked me off was that we did not receive the white and blue form on the flight. They never handed it out and when I went through immigration I had to run around to find the blue and white slips. At one point we were (some other travellors and me) so angry that we called one of the immigration officers over to let them know that we did not recieve the slips and they made United staff walk around handing out slips.
However, it would have been way easier if we could have filled them out on the plane.

Getting through immigration itself was an adventure. It took me three hours to get through and the only thing I could think about was the dogs.

After I got my passport back and the OK to go and pick up my stuff I immediately called for help. There was no way I could carry four suitcases and two dogs myself. Two packers helped me around and going through Customs was the easiest part of all.
They led me outside to a green yard where I let the dogs pee and poop. We then went to the AVIS bus and loaded the baggage. I tipped them with 20 Dollars each. I thought it was well worth it, especially since they helped out a lot. I wouldn’t have known where to go and they lead the way.

At AVIS itself people were very friendly and helpfull as well. They did everything to get me a rental. Funny thing is that they chose the USEUR Drivers license over the international license because the USEUR license is a Government license.
I wanted to pay with the debit card and they had to do a credit check. Since I just got to the US I don’t have any credit at all and the check failed. Since I didn’t have a cellphone either they let me use their phone to call my bank so I could get some money transfered to the credit card.

I got the Expedition and I totally fell in love with that car.
They helped loading the car but clearly didn’t know how to load the kennels to make the most of the space, so I did that myself.

By the time I drove off the AVIS Lot it was already 1900. I stopped in Pensylvania. I was so tired that I had to get off the Interstate. I walked into a Daily Inn and luckily they are pet friendly. I had to pay a ten dollar pet fee.

I took the dogs, left the luggage in the car, went straight to the room to feed the dogs. After that I fell on the bed and slept through to the early morning.
Since I had the dogs I didn’t need a clock or a call to wake me up. Next to the hotel was a huge yard and I let the dogs run on there. At that point I did not care about a leash law. We were in the middle of nowhere and I doubt anyone cared. They had to run and thats what they did.

I went back inside, had a coffee, checked out and hit the road.
We stopped three times before we got to Watertown and arrived “at home”.

It’s been 7 days since I left Germany.
It’s snowing like crazy and our neighbor had to plow us out. I prepared for this and got dozens of winterboots but they don’t help much since the snow reaches to the hips and I literally sink in and get soaking wet from it.

The dogs love it though. They roam and chase each other through the snow and have tons of fun. The cat that got abandoned by the previous tenants, which we adopted stays in the house. It’s funny, she’s standing in front of the door and wants out. She makes one step into the snow, looks at you like she wanted to say “Naaaah… changed my mind…” and walks right back in.

Still wating for the Visa

sigh… still no envelope…hopefully it’ll get here before December.

I just want the move to be over. I am in between countries and don’t want to stay at my parents place forever. While Yukon went to the US with my husband and is staying with Chris until I get there, Indra and Zenzy are staying outside in the outdoor kennels.

Zenzy

I miss my husband and I just want to get over there before Christmas.
We went to Rammstein to get two brandnew kennel. They have the same size as the old ones and the next size would be Giant. I am not sure if I should get a Giant Kennel for Zenzy and Indra. While United said they want to see Giant Kennels I am concerned about the safety of my dogs. They would be tossed around in those kennels like tennis balls and that can’t be good.
Does she really look like she needs a Giant sized Kennel?

I don’t think so…

Military Families abandoning their pets

I feel ashamed.

Ashamed because there are people, military families to be precise, out there that not only abandon their pets in wilderness but they leave them behind in their old apartment and don’t care whether they are found or not. It is a big issue at every single duty station over here in Germany and it’s not only a problem in Germany. It’s a problem all over the world (Abandonment of pets puts strain on Okinawa Shelters), wherever you find US Military Families!

To name a few:

Is that what the US Military Families stands for? Are these the values? Leaving pets, so called “Family Members” behind to die?

Seriously?

Or you abandon it in the wild?

You know… it’s illegal to do that over here, right? You know that you are actually breaking German Law by abandoning a pet and the worst thing is, that you ruin it for the ones who are responsible.

German Shelters don’t adopt to military families for a reason and to be honest, I understand why they won’t adopt out to them anymore. To many adopted pets and then left them behind. In the short time I have lived in military housing I’ve seen dogs being abused, crated for the entire day, only taken out to pee and poop and other than that they’ve been locked down in the house all year around. Pets being mistreated with an electric shocker which is illegal in Germany as well and sometimes I wonder why some of you people even have pets!

Seriously, why do you have pets if you only take them out to pee and poop, why do you adopt a dog if all you do is to leave him behind anyway? WHY?

If you can’t care for a pet, don’t get one!

News stories like these make all of us look bad and with all of us I mean everybody, including foreign born spouses.

Think twice before you not only abandon your pet but break German laws!
